چکیده

The inhomogeneous cosmological reionization process leaves tangible imprints in the intergalactic medium down to z ∼ 4− 5. The Lyman-α forest flux power spectrum provides a potentially powerful probe of the epoch of reionization. With the expected full SDSS III quasar sample (∼ 10, 000 quasars) we show that two cosmological reionization scenarios, one completing reionization at z = 6 and the other at z = 9, can be distinguished at ∼ 7σ level by utilizing Lyα forest absorption spectra at z = 4.5 ± 0.5, in the absence of other physical processes that may also affect the Lyα flux power spectrum. The redshift range z = 4 − 5 may provide the best window, because there is still enough transmitted flux and quasars to measure precise statistics of the flux fluctuations, and the IGM still retains a significant amount of memory of reionization.

The Thermal Memory of Reionization History

The recent measurement by WMAP of a large electron scattering optical depth τe = 0.17 ± 0.04 is consistent with a simple model of reionization in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) is ionized at redshift z ∼ 15, and remains highly ionized thereafter. Here, we show that existing measurements of the IGM temperature from the Lyman-alpha (Lyα) forest at z ∼ 2 − 4 rule out this “vanilla” model. Un...

Lyman-α Emitters at Z=5.7

Lyman-α galaxies at high redshifts offer a powerful probe of both the formation of galaxies and the reionization of the intergalactic medium. Lyman-α line emission is an efficient tool for identifying young galaxies at high redshift, because it is strong in systems with young stars and little or no dust — properties expected in galaxies undergoing their first burst of star-formation. Lyman-α ga...

Did Massive Primordial Stars Preenrich the Lyman Alpha Forest?

We examine the dynamical evolution and statistical properties of the supernova ejecta of massive primordial stars in a cosmological framework to determine whether this first population of stars could have enriched the universe to the levels and dispersions seen by the most recent observations of the Lyman-α forest. We evolve a ΛCDM model in a 1 Mpc volume to a redshift of z = 15 and add “bubble...

Probing Reionization with Quasar Spectra: the Impact of the Intrinsic Lyman-α Emission Line Shape Uncertainty

Arguably the best hope of understanding the tail end of the reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift z > 6 is through the detection and characterization of the Gunn-Peterson (GP) damping wing absorption of the IGM in bright quasar spectra. However, the use of quasar spectra to measure the IGM damping wing requires a model of the quasar’s intrinsic Lyman-α emission line. Here w...

Essential observations of the Lyman continuum

Concurrent observations of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman α (Lyα) emission escaping from star-forming systems at low redshift are essential to understanding the physics of reionization at high redshift (z & 6). Some have suggested reionization is dominated by numerous small galaxies with LyC escape fractions fe ∼ 10%, while others suggest mini-quasars with higher fe might also play a role. At ...
